The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) Council convened a significant general meeting on Monday, marking a pivotal session for the city's administrative and developmental agenda. Chaired by Mayor Karachi, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, the gathering at the Council Hall in the KMC Head Office resulted in the unanimous approval of several crucial resolutions aimed at addressing urban challenges.
Condolences and Key Approvals on Urban Projects
The session commenced on a somber note as members offered condolences and recited fateha for a young child who tragically lost his life after falling into an open manhole in Gulshan-e-Iqbal. This incident underscored the urgent need for municipal vigilance.
Subsequently, the council turned its attention to a packed agenda. A total of seven resolutions were passed, comprising four listed items and three private resolutions. Major development-focused approvals included a joint venture between the KMC Estate Department and Zubair Associates for constructing vertical charged parking at Bolton Market's third floor in the Old City Area.
Furthermore, the council greenlit the leasing of a 4-acre vacant plot (D-19) at the Bus Terminal in Gulshan-e-Ghazi, Baldia Town, designated for parking facilities to ease congestion. In a move to enhance the city's infrastructure and aesthetics, the council approved the PC-I cost estimates for the improvement, rehabilitation, and beautification of roads and footpaths surrounding various commercial and business districts across Karachi.
Focus on Social Welfare and Tributes
Beyond infrastructure, the council demonstrated a strong commitment to social welfare. One privately tabled resolution, which received unanimous support, mandates long-term and sustainable measures for the rehabilitation of persons with disabilities in Karachi. This comprehensive plan includes provisions for monthly rations, education, essential facilities, and the establishment of institutions aimed at skill development to make individuals employable.
In a tribute to a political stalwart, the council expressed heartfelt condolences on the passing of senior Pakistan People’s Party leader Lal Bakhsh Bhutto. To honor his political services, the body approved renaming the Gutter Baghicha Treatment Plant in his memory.
Immediate Road Repair Authorized
Addressing immediate public concerns, the council authorized urgent repair works on Business Recorder Road, specifically the stretch from Guru Mandir to Lasbela Signal. This was achieved by officially including it among the 106 roads under KMC's jurisdiction, prioritizing public interest and smoother traffic flow.
The meeting provided a platform for various council members to share their views on the city's affairs. Following the deliberations, the session was adjourned indefinitely. The resolutions passed signal a multi-faceted approach by the KMC to tackle Karachi's pressing issues, from infrastructure and commerce to social inclusion and public safety.
