For years, Pakistan has emphasized its position as a natural bridge between western China and the Arabian Sea. However, this promise has always hinged on the quality, safety, and reliability of the road network traversing the country's most challenging terrain. The Mansehra-Naran-Jhal Khand-Chilas motorway can now complete one of the most critical missing links in that chain. If Pakistan is serious about transforming geography into economic strength, such routes must be upgraded to modern motorway standards. A shorter, safer, and faster connection from the northern areas to the national road network will reduce travel time, lower costs, and create substantial commercial value.
The Importance of the Babusar Tunnel
The planned Babusar Tunnel is especially significant. Anyone familiar with the region understands the difficulty of traveling through the Babusar Pass, particularly in harsh weather conditions. A 13.5-kilometer tunnel bypassing this dangerous stretch would make the journey safer, shorter, and more reliable. It would also help maintain stable connectivity throughout the year, which is essential for trade, freight movement, and tourism. The northern areas are already experiencing a steady increase in visitors, business activity, and infrastructure demand. Better roads are not a luxury there; they are a necessity. Tourism cannot grow sustainably if access remains uncertain. Commerce cannot thrive if freight movement is slow, risky, and seasonal. Local communities cannot fully benefit from national development unless they are connected to markets, services, and opportunities.
Infrastructure and Environmental Considerations
The project's design, which includes rest areas, freight terminals, and provisions for future expansion, suggests that the government is thinking beyond short-term construction. This is a welcome approach. What matters now is execution. Pakistan has too often announced transformational infrastructure projects only to see them delayed, diluted, or abandoned.
