K-P Governor Invites CM for Unity, Criticizes Ex-CM, Reviews Security

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi has called for closer collaboration between the province and the federal government to address pressing issues, extending an invitation to the Chief Minister to adopt the same cooperative approach demonstrated on wheat and CNG matters for other provincial concerns. Speaking to media during his visit to the main ninth Muharram procession, the Governor revealed that multiple meetings had already been held with the Chief Secretary and Inspector General of Police regarding law and order in the province. He cautioned that external enemies do not wish to see Pakistan at peace.

Governor Comments on CM’s Speech and Ex-CM’s Tenure

Commenting on the Chief Minister's recent address, Governor Kundi described it as a “traditional” speech, similar to those delivered by previous chief ministers. While acknowledging the right to advocate for the province’s case with the federation, he stressed that such advocacy should be conducted through logic and solid arguments rather than abusive language. The Governor was sharply critical of the former chief minister, asserting that when in power he had acted like a “Pharaoh” but was now admitting his mistakes. “Despite ruling for 13 years, he has learned nothing,” the Governor added.

Provincial Resources and Assembly Incident

Highlighting provincial resources, Governor Kundi pointed out that Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa produces the highest quantity of oil and gas in the country, yet lamented that the benefits of these resources are being transferred to other provinces. Expressing serious concern over a recent incident in the provincial assembly, the Governor said it was perhaps the first time in Pakistan’s history that private security guards were brought into the House to chant slogans for a political party. “This was not a PTI rally but the provincial assembly, whose sanctity was violated,” he said. He demanded that the Speaker take immediate notice, issue show-cause notices to those involved, and ensure strict punishment, warning that failure to act would set a dangerous precedent.

Muharram Security Arrangements Reviewed

Earlier on Thursday, Governor Kundi visited the main ninth Muharram procession emerging from Naim Shah Chowk in Peshawar’s Saddar area and reviewed security arrangements. He commended the IGP, the administration, and leaders of both Shia and Sunni communities for their excellent arrangements. The Governor stated that police had made outstanding preparations across the province, particularly in Peshawar, for Muharram, with efforts underway to ensure Ashura passes peacefully. He directed all stakeholders to promote mutual respect, unity, and cooperation among different schools of thought and ensure the provision of all possible facilities for processions and majalis.

Call for Peace and Investment

The Governor stressed that everyone must rise above political affiliations during Muharram and work for peace, brotherhood, and solidarity. He added that peace and stability in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa are essential for increased investment and employment opportunities. The Governor also visited the Supreme Command Post at Kohati Gate, Peshawar, where Deputy Commissioner Peshawar Sanaullah gave him a detailed briefing on security and monitoring arrangements. He was informed that nearly 90 per cent of processions and majalis take place in the walled city areas, which are under constant surveillance through modern cameras. Over 11,000 security personnel have been deployed in Peshawar for Muharram.

Safe City Project and Police Salaries

Later, the Governor visited the Integrated Command and Control System at Police Lines, Peshawar, where CCPO Peshawar Dr Mian Saeed briefed him on the security monitoring system. The CCPO informed him that more than 600 cameras are being used to monitor Muharram events in Peshawar, Kohat, Hangu, Bannu, and Dera Ismail Khan. The Governor described the Safe City project as indispensable for law and order in the province. He praised the police for their commendable performance despite limited resources and noted that police salaries in the province are lower than in other provinces. He announced that he would send recommendations to the Chief Minister for increasing police salaries and assured the force of his full support.
