Mass Arrests Amid Nationwide Anti-Migrant Protests
South African police announced that more than 900 individuals were arrested on Tuesday as anti-migrant protests swept across the country. According to Deputy National Police Commissioner Tebello Mosikili, the demonstrations were largely peaceful, but a minority escalated into violence and looting.
Of the 120 marches that occurred on Tuesday, 108 remained peaceful, while 12 required law enforcement intervention due to unrest. Mosikili stated that some of those arrested were undocumented migrants detained for violating immigration rules, while others faced charges of public violence, harboring illegal immigrants, and robbery.
Security Reinforcements and Military Deployment
Police reinforcements were deployed overnight to five of South Africa's nine provinces to address isolated incidents of looting and criminality. Additionally, soldiers were sent to Johannesburg's Hillbrow neighborhood to support police operations. The military presence aimed to stabilize areas where tensions were highest.
Background of the Protests
Tuesday's marches were organized to mark a deadline set by an anti-immigrant movement for undocumented migrants to leave South Africa. The protests follow months of unrest that have drawn international criticism, as foreigners have been driven from their homes and seen their businesses and property vandalized. The situation highlights ongoing tensions over immigration in the country.
