Six Highly Wanted Militants Killed in KP Operation

The Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police announced on Wednesday that six “highly wanted” militants were killed in an operation in the mountainous areas of Lower Dir district. The operation followed an attack on a police checkpoint at Badwan Bridge in Tehsil Adenzai, which resulted in the death of a police constable.

Details of the Operation

The CTD stated that the operation was launched based on intelligence reports indicating the presence of militants in the region. During the operation, the militants opened indiscriminate fire on police teams. Police returned fire in self-defense, and a prolonged exchange of fire ensued. After the firing ceased, a search operation was conducted, revealing the bodies of six terrorists.

Weapons Recovered

The CTD recovered six Kalashnikov rifles, three hand grenades, and a large quantity of ammunition from the possession of the slain militants. The suspected militants were wanted in multiple terrorism-related cases. An operation is underway to apprehend other militants who escaped during the police operation.

Context of Militancy in Pakistan

Pakistan has witnessed a surge in militant attacks, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and southwestern Balochistan. Both regions border Afghanistan and are frequently targeted by the Pakistani Taliban (Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, TTP) and Baloch separatist groups, including the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA). Islamabad accuses India of financing these groups and Afghanistan of providing safe havens for them, allegations that New Delhi and Kabul deny.

Ongoing Security Challenges

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has long been the center of Pakistan’s counterterrorism operations. Frequent militant attacks targeting civilians and security personnel highlight the ongoing security challenges. In May, the Pakistan military reported killing 44 militants in multiple operations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as Islamabad intensified its campaign against armed groups operating near the Afghan border.
