Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday formally signed the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the United States and Iran in his capacity as a mediator, according to media reports. The memorandum reportedly carries the signatures of US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, a development being described as a significant diplomatic breakthrough aimed at reducing regional tensions and preventing further escalation.

PM Shehbaz to Visit Switzerland for Talks

Reports said Prime Minister Sharif is expected to travel to Switzerland to participate in discussions and related events following the signing of the agreement. Meanwhile, the Swiss government has confirmed that talks between Iranian and US officials are scheduled for June 19 at the Bürgenstock Resort. Representatives from Pakistan and Qatar are also expected to attend the meeting in their roles as mediators. The discussions are expected to focus on the implementation of the memorandum and the next phase of diplomatic engagement between Washington and Tehran.

Landmark Agreement Signed

Earlier, the United States and Iran signed the landmark agreement, after which US officials publicly presented its contents to members of the media. The agreement is being viewed as an important step towards de-escalation and the strengthening of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

Speaking to reporters after the G7 summit, President Trump praised the mediation efforts of Pakistan and Qatar, crediting them with helping advance negotiations between the United States and Iran. He described the memorandum as a potential pathway to broader regional stability and expressed optimism about the prospects for continued dialogue.
