UEFA Condemns FIFA's Decision on Balogun
UEFA has strongly criticized FIFA for suspending Folarin Balogun's one-match ban after a red card, calling it a violation of football's integrity. The decision, made after U.S. President Donald Trump intervened, allows Balogun to play in the World Cup last 16 match against Belgium.
Background of the Incident
Balogun received a straight red card after a video review for stepping on a Bosnia-Herzegovina defender's foot during the round-of-32 match, which the U.S. won 2-0. Under FIFA rules, a straight red card triggers an automatic one-game suspension.
Trump's Intervention
Trump called FIFA President Gianni Infantino to request a review of the punishment. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also publicly called for the card to be rescinded. FIFA's disciplinary committee then suspended the ban for a probationary period of one year.
UEFA's Strong Statement
In a statement, UEFA said: "Yesterday’s decision to suspend for a probationary period of a year the implementation of the one-match automatic suspension following the red card issued to the player Folarin Balogun crossed a red line." UEFA emphasized that rules are essential for fair competition and that this decision sets a dangerous precedent.
Reactions from Belgium
Belgium coach Rudi Garcia expressed disbelief, saying: "I didn't know that at the FIFA World Cup, the 5th of July is now the 1st of April, and that it's April Fool's Day." Balogun, who has scored three goals in the tournament, will now play in the match.
FIFA's Explanation
FIFA offered no specific explanation for the suspension, which has been widely criticized. Trump celebrated the decision on Truth Social, writing: "Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right, and reversing a great injustice!"
