Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan has arrived in Bahrain to participate in a meeting of foreign ministers from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the United States. The gathering, reported by the Saudi Press Agency, will focus on strategic cooperation and common priorities between the GCC states and the US.
Context of the Meeting: US-Iran Memorandum of Understanding
The meeting comes less than a week after the United States and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to halt their war, which had engulfed the Middle East for over 100 days and affected several GCC capitals. The MOU marks a significant de-escalation after a prolonged conflict that disrupted regional stability.
Prince Faisal Received in Manama
Prince Faisal was received in Manama by Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al-Zayani. Also present at the reception were Naif bin Bandar Al-Sudairi, the Saudi ambassador to Bahrain, and officials from Bahrain’s foreign ministry.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s Regional Tour
Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited Kuwait, where he participated in a flag-raising ceremony at the US Embassy. The embassy resumed operations on Wednesday after a period of closure. Rubio also visited Abu Dhabi on Tuesday to discuss the Iran deal during a meeting with UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed.
Prince Faisal’s Diplomatic Calls
On Wednesday, Prince Faisal spoke with Kyrgyzstan’s Foreign Minister Zheenbek Kulubaev to congratulate him on Kyrgyzstan’s election as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2027–2028 term. In a separate call, Prince Faisal discussed regional developments with his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan.
Strategic Cooperation Between GCC and US
The GCC-US ministerial meeting is expected to address a range of issues including security cooperation, economic partnerships, and the implementation of the US-Iran MOU. The discussions aim to strengthen the strategic alliance between the Gulf states and the United States in the wake of the recent conflict.
