In response to severe disruptions in air travel caused by escalating tensions in the Middle East, Pakistani diplomatic missions in Saudi Arabia have implemented emergency measures to assist stranded travelers. According to Radio Pakistan, the Pakistani Embassy in Riyadh and the Consulate General in Jeddah have established dedicated, round-the-clock helplines and deployed support teams at major regional airports.
Immediate Assistance for Pakistani Travelers
The government of Pakistan has instructed its missions to provide comprehensive facilitation to passengers, particularly Umrah pilgrims and other travelers, who have been impacted by the ongoing Gulf crisis. Officials confirmed that teams from @PakinSaudiArab are actively working to ensure the safety, comfort, and smooth repatriation of Pakistanis stranded in Riyadh and other locations.
Current Situation in Saudi Arabia
Authorities report that the situation for Pakistani pilgrims and travelers in key cities such as Jeddah, Makkah, and Madinah remains stable. However, minor operational restrictions and precautionary risk advisories are currently in effect in parts of the regional airspace due to the conflict. These measures are designed to mitigate risks while maintaining essential travel support.
Background of the Regional Conflict
Tensions in the Middle East escalated sharply following US and Israeli air strikes last week that resulted in the assassination of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several senior officials. This triggered a wave of retaliatory attacks from Tehran, significantly widening the conflict across the region and disrupting international air travel.
Impact on Flight Operations
The crisis has led to widespread flight cancellations affecting Pakistani international airports. Since February 28, more than 570 flights to Gulf countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Qatar, have been canceled. Affected carriers include:
- Emirates
- Etihad Airways
- Air Arabia
- Pakistan International Airlines
- Airblue
- Flydubai
- Qatar Airways
Government Response and Economic Impact
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar stated that the government has taken comprehensive steps to facilitate Pakistanis stranded in Iran and other Gulf countries. Special facilitation desks have been established to assist returning nationals, with active support from Pakistan's embassy in Abu Dhabi and consulates in Jeddah, Dubai, Tehran, Zahedan, and Mashhad.
Officials estimate that the disruptions and airspace closures in several Gulf countries have caused Pakistan an estimated revenue shortfall of Rs20 billion, highlighting the significant economic impact of the crisis.
Global Aviation Disruptions
Globally, the Middle East conflict has led to large-scale disruptions in air travel. Despite efforts by governments and airlines to arrange special evacuation flights, more than 13,000 flights have been canceled internationally. According to aviation analytics firm Cirium, flights in the region account for approximately 900,000 seats daily, indicating that the number of affected travelers could already exceed one million.
The Pakistani government continues to monitor the situation closely and has assured its citizens that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure their safety and facilitate their travel during this challenging period.
