Pakistan has stated that the international community's recognition of its role in defusing tensions between the United States and Iran demonstrates increasing trust in Islamabad's dedication to fostering dialogue, peace, and stability in the region. This statement came after the recent signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Washington and Tehran, which established a ceasefire framework and initiated negotiations for a broader settlement, followed by the Lucerne summit in Switzerland that produced a roadmap for a final agreement within 60 days.
Official Statement from Foreign Office
During a weekly news briefing, Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi said, “Pakistan welcomes the positive recognition and encouraging remarks from various countries, partners and members of the international community regarding our constructive role in promoting regional peace, dialogue and de-escalation efforts.” He added, “Such recognition reflects the international community’s trust in Pakistan’s commitment to advancing dialogue, peace, security and stability across the region and beyond.”
Pakistan's Role as Facilitator
Pakistan emerged as a key facilitator in US-Iran diplomacy, hosting early high-level contacts between the two sides and collaborating with Qatar to support subsequent negotiations. The Islamabad MOU, signed last week, ended months of conflict between the United States and Iran and paved the way for negotiations aimed at reaching a broader peace agreement. The follow-up talks in Switzerland on Sunday resulted in a roadmap for a final settlement and established mechanisms to support the implementation of the accord.
Emphasis on Dialogue and Diplomacy
Andrabi emphasized that these developments reaffirm Pakistan's longstanding belief that dialogue remains the most effective way to resolve international disputes. “The Islamabad MOU and the Lucerne Summit reinforce our faith in dialogue and diplomacy as the most effective means for peaceful settlement of disputes and conflicts,” he said.
Strategic Implications for Pakistan
Pakistan has increasingly highlighted its diplomatic role in the process. Officials argue that its efforts to support de-escalation have enhanced the country's standing internationally and could create opportunities for deeper political and economic engagement with regional and global partners. The recognition from the international community is seen as a validation of Pakistan's foreign policy approach, which prioritizes mediation and conflict resolution.
