Lahore Hosts Farewell Reception for Chinese Consul General Zhao Shiren and Spring Festival Celebrations

A dignified farewell reception was held in Lahore to honor Chinese Consul General Mr Zhao Shiren, coinciding with celebrations of the Chinese Spring Festival. This event reaffirmed the enduring friendship between China and Pakistan, marking the completion of nearly four years of his diplomatic service in Punjab. The gathering brought together diplomats, government officials, business leaders, academics, media representatives, and members of the Chinese community, underscoring the strong bilateral ties.

Symbolism of the Year of the Horse and Future Relations

In his address, Mr Zhao highlighted the significance of 2026 as the Year of the Horse in the Chinese lunar calendar, which symbolises strength, resilience, and forward momentum. He expressed hope that China–Pakistan relations would continue to advance “like a charging horse,” overcoming challenges and serving as a model of cooperation based on mutual respect and shared benefit. This metaphor emphasised the dynamic and progressive nature of the partnership between the two nations.

Lt Col (retd) Syed Ahmed Nadeem Qadri presented a commemorative shield to the consul general, acknowledging his services and contributions toward strengthening Pak-China friendship and promoting development in Punjab. This gesture highlighted the appreciation for Mr Zhao's efforts during his tenure.

Milestones and Future Prospects in Bilateral Ties

Mr Zhao noted that 2026 marks the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Pakistan. He expressed confidence that bilateral ties would continue to grow, following the recent commemorative launch jointly inaugurated by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar in Beijing. This milestone underscores the long-standing and evolving partnership between the two countries.

Personal Reflections and Priorities

Recalling his arrival in Lahore in May 2022, Mr Zhao described the city as his “second home.” He emphasised that ensuring the safety and well-being of Chinese nationals and projects in Punjab remained a key priority during his service. He pledged to remain a lifelong supporter of China-Pakistan friendship and thanked The Nation and Nawa-i-Waqt for their cooperation and support, reinforcing his commitment to the relationship beyond his official role.
