A four-story apartment building collapsed on Tuesday in the Petralona neighborhood of Athens, prompting a rescue operation by Greek firefighters and emergency crews. The fire brigade confirmed that four individuals who were initially reported as trapped have been located and are safe, but the search continues for any other potential victims.
Rescue Efforts Underway
Crews with rescue dogs are meticulously combing through the rubble, while additional forces remain on standby, according to a statement from the fire service. The cause of the collapse remains unclear, though the fire brigade noted that construction work was ongoing in an adjacent building at the time of the incident.
The building contained seven apartments, and authorities have not yet determined whether all residents were accounted for. The operation is being conducted with caution to ensure no one else is trapped beneath the debris.
Ongoing Investigation
Local authorities have launched an investigation into the structural failure. The Petralona area, a densely populated residential district, has seen several older buildings, and concerns about construction safety have been raised in the past. The fire brigade continues to coordinate with other emergency services to stabilize the site and prevent further collapses.
As of now, no fatalities have been reported, and the rescued individuals are receiving medical attention. The search operation is expected to continue until the entire building is cleared.
