Chronic back pain has become a widespread health crisis across South Punjab, with medical experts revealing that approximately one in every five patients visiting clinics suffers from spine-related problems. The region, however, continues to operate without a single dedicated spine-care facility, leaving thousands without access to proper medical treatment.
Growing Back Pain Epidemic in Southern Punjab
Dr. Muhammad Mehmood Ahmed, a prominent spine surgeon, has sounded the alarm about this escalating health emergency. He confirmed that around 20 percent of all patients seeking medical attention in the region present with chronic back pain and spinal issues.
"Back treatment is not as difficult as people assume. The real challenge is misinformation, not medical science," Dr. Mehmood emphasized during his assessment of the situation. He explained that back pain stems from multiple sources including bio-mechanical factors, psychological components, and various pain-related conditions - all of which can be effectively managed with timely specialist intervention.
Treatment Success and Accessibility Challenges
The spine specialist delivered encouraging news about treatment outcomes, stating that nearly 90% of back pain patients show significant improvement when treated with appropriate medication and structured exercise programs under specialist supervision.
"If patients seek care from qualified professionals instead of relying on random advice, they can achieve excellent recovery," Dr. Mehmood assured. He stressed that the fundamental problem lies in the lack of specialized medical infrastructure throughout South Punjab.
Highlighting the critical gap in healthcare services, Dr. Mehmood revealed, "There is no dedicated hospital for spine injuries or spinal disorders in South Punjab. Because of this, many patients fail to receive accurate diagnosis and proper follow-up, which leads to long-term complications."
Dispelling Myths About Spine Surgery
Dr. Mehmood directly addressed the widespread fear surrounding spine surgery, calling such apprehensions unnecessary and unfounded. "Modern spine surgery is safe, supported by advanced technology. However, myths related to back pain and surgery have created anxiety among patients. These misconceptions must be corrected," he asserted.
The delayed treatment often results in permanent physical changes, with many patients developing stooped postures that could have been prevented with timely medical attention. "Patients should consult trained spine experts to prevent such deformities," Dr. Mehmood advised.
He described his collaborative approach with a skilled team of physiotherapists who help determine whether patients require physiotherapy, medication, or surgical intervention. "Every case is different, but all three treatment pathways are safe when properly recommended," he explained.
Urgent Call for Government Action
Dr. Mehmood made a compelling appeal for government intervention, stressing the immediate need to establish dedicated back-pain and spine-injury centers staffed with qualified medical professionals.
"South Punjab urgently needs specialized spine units. Without them, patients continue to suffer from preventable disability," he stressed, highlighting the particular urgency for patients with nerve damage who require immediate treatment.
The financial burden of spine care presents another significant barrier. Dr. Mehmood pointed out that specialized implants and the required technological support remain expensive and beyond the reach of many families in South Punjab, making the establishment of public, affordable spine-care facilities even more critical.
"Spine surgery is safe, physiotherapy is effective, and medicines work for the majority. The real issue is the misinformation spreading fear. With the right guidance, patients can lead healthy lives," Dr. Mehmood concluded, offering hope while underscoring the pressing need for systemic healthcare improvements in the region.
