YDA President Highlights Doctors' Crisis: Low Salaries, Overwork, and Security Threats
Doctors Face Low Pay, Overwork, and Security Issues in Pakistan

YDA President Exposes Severe Challenges Facing Doctors in Pakistan

In a stark revelation, Dr. Nauman Chaudhry, President of the Young Doctors Association (YDA) at Allied Hospital in Faisalabad, has highlighted the profound difficulties confronting the medical community in the current era. He emphasized that doctors are grappling with a multifaceted crisis that threatens both their well-being and the quality of patient care.

Financial Strain Due to Inflation and Stagnant Salaries

Dr. Chaudhry pointed out that inflation in Pakistan has soared to unprecedented levels, yet doctors' salaries have not seen corresponding increases. This disparity has placed immense financial pressure on healthcare professionals, making it increasingly difficult for them to manage their personal and professional expenses. The situation is exacerbated by the rising cost of living, which further strains their economic stability.

Excessive Workloads and Staff Shortages in Government Hospitals

Contrary to international medical standards and ethical principles, doctors in government hospitals are being subjected to excessive workloads. Dr. Chaudhry noted that in emergency wards, a single doctor is often required to perform continuous 24-hour duties. This practice is a direct result of severe staff shortages in public hospitals, forcing doctors to work beyond their physical and mental limits. The consequences include extreme mental stress and physical exhaustion, which can compromise patient safety and doctor health.

Inadequate Security and Resources Leading to Violence

Alongside resource shortages, security arrangements in hospitals are alarmingly inadequate. Doctors are responsible for the complete treatment and care of patients, but when medicines or other facilities are not provided timely by hospital administrations, they become the primary targets of frustration from patients' attendants. Due to poor security measures, incidents of verbal abuse, physical fights, and violence against doctors occur frequently, creating a hostile work environment.

Call for Immediate Government Action

In response to these pressing issues, Dr. Nauman Chaudhry has demanded that the Punjab government take immediate and effective steps to resolve the challenges faced by doctors. He urged authorities to address salary disparities, improve staffing levels, and enhance security protocols to ensure a safer and more supportive healthcare system.

The situation underscores the urgent need for systemic reforms in Pakistan's healthcare sector to protect both medical professionals and the patients they serve.
