Taylor Swift's Former Teacher Kirk Schwabe Dies at 69

Kirk Schwabe, Taylor Swift's former high school teacher and one-time security guard, has died aged 69 after a battle with cancer on the same day the singer married Travis Kelce in New York City. His family confirmed that Schwabe passed away on July 3, just hours before Swift and Kelce exchanged vows at Madison Square Garden.

Background and Teaching Career

Schwabe taught criminal justice at Hendersonville High School in Tennessee, where Swift was a student between 2004 and 2006. Before becoming a teacher, he served as a police officer in Chicago. He later left teaching in 2009 to work as Swift's security guard at the request of her father, Scott Swift, as the singer's career rapidly took off.

Family Tributes

His wife, Jane Schwabe, said he always treated Swift "like he did his daughters," while their daughter remembered him as someone who made people feel "seen, valued and protected." "Whether you were family, one of his students, or someone like Taylor whose path crossed his, he cared deeply about people. That's the legacy he leaves behind," she said.

Only Interview and Reflections

Just days before his death, Schwabe gave what would become his only interview to The Telegraph, reflecting on Swift's remarkable rise to global superstardom. He recalled telling the young singer that her life was about to change forever. "You're a superstar. This is not fun and games no more. You are it. Everything keeps going up and up and up, and the sky's the limit for you," he said.

Role as Security Guard and Lasting Bond

Schwabe eventually stepped down from his role as Swift's bodyguard after experiencing burnout, telling the singer that she needed a full-time professional security team as her fame continued to grow. Despite leaving the job, the two remained close over the years. Swift often spoke fondly of Schwabe and once described his criminal justice class as the most exciting course she took in school. Fans have long speculated that lessons from his classroom inspired themes in songs such as "No Body, No Crime." She also honoured him in her 2010 film Valentine's Day by naming her on-screen teacher "Mr Schwabe."

Support for Swift's Relationship

According to The Telegraph, Schwabe had recently expressed confidence in Swift's relationship with Kelce, saying he trusted her judgement and believed she knew what was best for herself. Although he did not live to see the ceremony, his family said he was delighted that the couple had found happiness together.

Schwabe is survived by his wife, Jane, and their daughters. His family said he would be remembered not only as a dedicated educator and protector, but as someone who always put others first, whether they were his students, his family or one of the world's biggest music stars.
