KMU Academic Council Approves Major Reforms in Peshawar Meeting
The 34th meeting of the Academic Council at Khyber Medical University (KMU) in Peshawar was held recently, marking a significant step forward in strengthening academic policies and enhancing educational programmes across the institution. During this session, several crucial decisions were made to bolster academic standards and improve student facilitation, reflecting KMU's commitment to excellence in medical and health sciences education.
Key Approvals and Strategic Measures
The council began by approving the minutes of the 33rd Academic Council meeting, setting a foundation for ongoing progress. It endorsed multiple strategic measures aimed at elevating academic quality, including the formal approval of minutes from the 44th and 45th Equivalence Committee meetings, as well as five meetings of the Relevance Assessment Committee. These actions underscore KMU's dedication to maintaining rigorous academic oversight and ensuring compliance with national educational frameworks.
Policy Revisions and Student-Centric Initiatives
In response to challenges faced by students regarding migration between KMU, other universities, and private institutions, the existing Migration Policy was revised to address student concerns more effectively. This move is designed to streamline processes and provide better support for academic transitions. Additionally, the council approved two Ethics courses for non-Muslim students as an alternative to the Fehm-ul-Quran course, promoting inclusivity and cultural sensitivity within the curriculum.
Curriculum and Programme Enhancements
Aligning with Higher Education Commission (HEC) policy requirements, the degree duration for over 160 undergraduate and postgraduate students was extended, ensuring adequate time for comprehensive learning. The council also gave its nod to several revised PhD courses and ten new degree, diploma, and certificate programmes, expanding educational opportunities and keeping pace with evolving industry demands. A landmark decision involved renaming the Institute of Paramedical Sciences (IPMS) to the Institute of Allied Health Sciences (IAHS), reflecting a broader academic vision and alignment with international standards in healthcare education.
Specialized Tracks and Faculty Regulations
Further approvals included the implementation of the Institutional Graduate Entrance Test (I-GET) for the PhD programme in Biochemistry and the revised curriculum for the Pharmacy degree programme. Revised rules for the appointment of visiting faculty were sanctioned in accordance with HEC regulations, aiming to enhance teaching quality. The MS Nursing programme was restructured into two specialized tracks: Critical Care MSN and MSN Education, catering to diverse career paths in nursing. Moreover, the integration of Nutrition curriculum into MBBS and BDS programs was approved to strengthen medical education and promote holistic healthcare training.

Addressing the meeting, Director Academics Professor Dr Zill-e-Huma highlighted the pivotal role of the Academic Council in shaping academic and administrative policies. She commended the council's contributions to launching new academic programs and maintaining the quality of existing ones. Expressing confidence in the council's leadership, she noted that its members would continue to guide KMU toward becoming a leading and prestigious academic institution in the region through innovative and forward-looking decisions. This meeting underscores KMU's proactive approach to adapting to educational challenges and fostering a dynamic learning environment in Peshawar.
