First Dragon Boat Festival Held on Kabul River in Charsadda

The first Dragon Boat Festival held on the Kabul River brought together athletes, cultural performers and spectators in Charsadda on Sunday, marking a new addition to Pakistan’s growing cultural exchanges with China. Organised by China Window, a Chinese cultural centre based in Peshawar, the event featured competitive boat races, cultural performances and community participation along the riverbank.

Competition Results

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police team and the Charsadda team jointly secured first place in the competition, while the Sports Writers Association team finished second and the Peshawar High Court team claimed third position. More than 100 participants competed in the races, demonstrating teamwork and rowing skills before a large gathering of spectators.

Women's Participation and Cultural Performances

One of the notable features of the event was the participation of female rowers, reflecting growing involvement of women in competitive sporting activities. Chinese guests also attended the festival and joined local participants in the celebrations. The programme included performances by the Federal Constabulary Band and traditional Khattak dance presentations, highlighting local cultural heritage alongside Chinese traditions associated with the Dragon Boat Festival.

Official Remarks

Special Assistant to the Chief Minister for Culture and Tourism Malik Adil Iqbal attended the event as chief guest. Provincial ministers, elected representatives, district administration officials and members of the public were also present. Addressing the gathering, Malik Adil Iqbal said the successful staging of the festival reflected the strengthening cultural ties between Pakistan and China and had the potential to promote tourism and recreational activities in the province.

Awards and Future Plans

At the conclusion of the event, trophies, medals and cash prizes were awarded to the winning teams. China Window Administrator Amjad Aziz Malik said the festival had introduced an important aspect of Chinese cultural heritage to local audiences while providing an opportunity for greater people-to-people interaction between the two countries. He added that organisers intended to make the Dragon Boat Festival a regular feature in the province’s cultural calendar in the coming years. Officials said the event was organised with the support of the district administration and relevant departments, which made arrangements for security and participant safety throughout the programme.
