Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDC) on Wednesday announced a significant oil and gas discovery from its exploratory well Bobi Deep-1 in Sindh's Sanghar district. This marks the first hydrocarbon find from the Massive Sand play within the Bobi and Dhamraki Mining Lease.
Discovery Details
In a statement, the company said the well successfully tested the Massive Sand interval of the Lower Goru Formation. It produced 2,000 barrels of oil per day (BOPD) and 1.1 million standard cubic feet of gas per day (MMSCFD) through a cased-hole Drill Stem Test (DST). OGDC described the discovery as a major milestone, emphasizing it was the first hydrocarbon discovery from the Massive Sand play within the Bobi and Dhamraki Mining Lease.
New Exploration Window
The company stated that the success had opened a new exploration window in the area by de-risking similar prospects in the surrounding region. This creates opportunities for future reserve additions and resource growth. According to the statement, the project had previously encountered complex subsurface challenges that resulted in the suspension of drilling operations.
Rather than abandoning the prospect, OGDC relied on indigenous expertise and adopted an innovative approach to address the issue. A multidisciplinary team of geoscientists and engineers worked closely with the Centre for Pure and Applied Geology at the University of Sindh, Jamshoro. They investigated the challenges through advanced geophysical surveys, subsurface studies, and field evaluations. The joint effort led to the development of a comprehensive geological and geophysical model, enabling the company to de-risk the prospect and resume operations safely.
Multiple engineering safeguards, specialized civil works, and extensive technical evaluations were undertaken before the drilling rig was redeployed and the target depth successfully reached. The Bobi Deep-1 success story stands as a testament to OGDC's indigenous innovation, technical excellence, and industry-academia collaboration.
Impact on Energy Security
The company said the discovery is expected to help enhance Pakistan's indigenous oil and gas production, strengthen energy security, reduce reliance on imported energy, and augment the country's hydrocarbon reserves base.
Recent Discoveries
The latest find adds to a series of discoveries announced by OGDC this year. In April, the company reported what it described as the highest-ever oil and gas discovery from a single well in Pakistan's history at the Baragzai X-01 exploratory well in the Nashpa Block of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa's Kohat district. According to the company, that well contributes around 10% of Pakistan's total crude oil production. OGDC estimated daily revenue from the well at Rs156 million, with projected monthly and annual revenues of Rs4.7 billion and Rs57 billion, respectively. The company also said the discovery could help save about $329 million annually in foreign exchange by reducing reliance on imported fuels.
Earlier, in February, OGDC announced a gas and condensate discovery at its Dars West-3 well in Sindh's Tando Allah Yar district. A day later, it reported another oil and gas discovery at the Baragzai X-01 (Slant) exploratory well in Kohat district.
