SFD Continues Financial Aid to Multiple Countries in 2026

The Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) has continued its financial support to several countries in 2026, including Sudan, Cameroon, Oman, and Palau, despite rising geopolitical tensions. Established in 1974 and operational since 1975, SFD has financed over 800 development projects in more than 100 countries, with total funding exceeding $22 billion. The fund provides financing across sectors such as health, education, transport, water, and energy, aiming to improve living conditions, strengthen local capacities, and create job opportunities in developing nations.

Water Supply Support in Sudan

In January, SFD signed a $10 million memorandum of understanding with Sudan and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to enhance water supply systems and assist communities affected by conflict and water scarcity. The Saudi-funded grant will rehabilitate and expand key water systems, including improvements to the Nile water system in Khartoum. The initiative incorporates solar-powered operations, technical capacity building, and community participation for long-term sustainability. UN High Commissioner for Refugees Barham Salih stated, "When people have access to essential services, they regain dignity, stability, and the ability to move forward." SFD CEO Sultan Abdulrahman Al-Marshad emphasized that access to safe water is fundamental to health and stability.

Industrial City Project in Oman

In February, SFD signed a $40 million MoU to support the Thumrait Industrial City Project in Oman. The project aims to promote industrial, logistical, developmental, and social sectors in Dhofar Governorate by establishing an integrated industrial city spanning approximately 3.94 million square meters. It includes constructing administrative buildings, service facilities, roads, electrical infrastructure, water networks, and two wastewater treatment plants. Al-Marshad noted that the deal reflects Saudi Arabia's commitment to supporting Oman's development sectors.

Road Rehabilitation in Cameroon

In March, SFD provided a $75 million development loan to Cameroon for rehabilitating the Sorawel-Dourbeye Road. The project will reduce isolation, strengthen connectivity, and facilitate regional trade with neighboring countries like Nigeria and Chad, while improving access to markets, healthcare, and education. Al-Marshad stated that the project contributes to sustainable development in Cameroon and the wider region. SFD's partnership with Cameroon spans over 40 years, with 10 projects totaling more than $180 million in infrastructure, education, and healthcare.

First Partnership with Palau

In April, SFD signed a $15 million development loan agreement with Palau, marking its first development partnership in the Pacific island nation. The financing will support projects led by Palauan developers, businesses, and entrepreneurs, aligning with national priorities to foster sustainable economic growth. President Surangel S. Whipps Jr. expressed deep appreciation, stating the agreement is about building a stronger Palauan economy by channeling funds through the National Development Bank.

Cooperation Agreement for Developing Nations

In May, SFD signed a framework cooperation agreement with Banque Saudi Fransi to enhance Saudi companies' participation in development projects financed by the fund in developing countries. The agreement aims to provide integrated financing products and banking services to support Saudi companies. The Saudi Press Agency reported that the agreement emphasizes enhancing development cooperation to achieve Sustainable Development Goals.
