Saudi Farmer Pioneers Pistachio Cultivation in Jouf

Saudi farmer Radhi Al-Sharari has successfully cultivated pistachios in the Jouf region, marking a significant step in the Kingdom's efforts to diversify agricultural production and enhance food security. Al-Sharari, driven by an ambitious vision and determination, introduced the Pistacia vera variety to the local market after years of patience and learning.

Origin and Motivation

Al-Sharari told Arab News that the idea of growing pistachios first came to him in 2017. His primary motivation was to introduce a new crop to Jouf, leveraging the region's distinctive agricultural conditions that are well suited to a diverse variety of crops. He chose pistachios to meet local market demand and create added value for the region.

Challenges and Adaptation

One of the biggest challenges at the start of the project was sourcing pistachio seeds and seedlings. Al-Sharari explained that the Pistacia vera variety proved successful, adapting well to Jouf's climate and soil. He emphasized that pistachio cultivation requires patience, with trees producing their first harvest about five years after planting and full production taking around seven years.

Factors for Success

Al-Sharari attributed the project's success to suitable soil, the availability of fresh water, Jouf's climate, and continued learning throughout the cultivation process. He noted that pistachio farming represents a promising opportunity in Saudi Arabia due to increased demand for high-value agricultural products, and wider cultivation could help meet domestic demand.

Impact on Food Security

Introducing new crops to the Kingdom not only diversifies agricultural production but also strengthens food security, creates new opportunities for agricultural investment, and provides economic prospects for farmers adopting modern practices. Al-Sharari advised interested farmers to focus on proper soil preparation and select high-quality seedlings, as these factors provide the foundation for a successful project.

“Success is only granted by God,” Al-Sharari said, expressing hope that the coming years will witness wider cultivation of pistachios across the Kingdom's regions.
