The Edhi Foundation reported on Saturday that 200 unclaimed bodies were recovered in Karachi during the first half of 2026, underscoring the persistent issue of unidentified fatalities in Pakistan's largest city.
Monthly Breakdown of Recoveries
According to the foundation's statement, the bodies included 13 women. The monthly figures show: 31 men and two women in January, 23 men and one woman in February, 22 men and three women in March, 30 men in April, 40 men in May, and 41 men and seven women in June. In the first four days of July, three additional unidentified male bodies were recovered.
Challenges in Identification
The organization noted that causes of death remain unknown for all recovered bodies. Authorities employ fingerprints, photographs, and the National Database Registration Authority's biometric system to identify the deceased. Unidentified bodies are buried by the Edhi Foundation after legal procedures.
The Edhi Foundation, which operates one of the world's largest volunteer ambulance networks, routinely recovers abandoned bodies from roadsides, riverbanks, bushes, and abandoned buildings across Karachi. The city, home to over 20 million people, has long struggled with this issue, raising questions about social support systems for vulnerable residents.
