The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has recorded five moderate earthquakes in Balochistan since Thursday, with the latest magnitude 5.2 tremor striking near Barkhan and surrounding areas on Friday. The series of seismic events has prompted authorities and experts to closely monitor ongoing tectonic activity in the region.
Details of Recent Tremors
According to the National Seismic Monitoring Centre, a magnitude 4.2 earthquake was recorded near Sibi at a depth of 42 kilometers, with its epicenter located 57 kilometers northeast of the city. Another magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck near Kohlu at a depth of 18 kilometers, with the epicenter approximately 65 kilometers northeast of the district. These events follow a pattern of increased seismic activity across Balochistan over the past 48 hours.
Expert Analysis on Seismic Activity
Chief Meteorologist Amir Haider Laghari explained that Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa lie in a tectonically active zone associated with the Eurasian Plate, making the region vulnerable to frequent seismic activity. He stated that the recent earthquakes are occurring along the upper section of the tectonic plate and reflect the natural release of tectonic stress. Laghari noted that seismic waves generated by earthquakes in other parts of the world can influence connected fault systems, although the occurrence of earthquakes depends on complex geological processes.
Historical Context and Forecasting Challenges
The chief meteorologist referred to historical seismic patterns, noting that major earthquakes in Indonesia during the early 2000s were followed by the devastating 2005 Kashmir earthquake. However, he emphasized that earthquake forecasting remains scientifically impossible, and neither the exact timing nor the intensity of future earthquakes can be predicted. Experts have advised that aftershocks and additional tremors remain possible as tectonic energy continues to be released.
Safety Advisory for Residents
Authorities have advised residents in affected areas to remain alert and follow safety guidelines in the event of further seismic activity. The PMD continues to monitor the situation and will provide updates as necessary.
