Australian Open Starts Early Amid Melbourne Heatwave, Fans Urged to Prepare
Australian Open Early Start Due to Melbourne Heatwave

Australian Open Adjusts Schedule for Saturday Due to Forecast High Temperatures in Melbourne

In response to an anticipated heatwave, the Australian Open has announced an earlier start time for matches on Saturday, 24 January. This proactive measure aims to ensure player safety and spectator comfort during the Grand Slam event.

Revised Match Times and Venue Operations

Play on the premier arena courts—Rod Laver Arena, Margaret Court Arena, and John Cain Arena—will now commence at 10:30 am, slightly ahead of the original schedule. Meanwhile, all other courts across the Melbourne Park complex will begin at their planned time of 10:00 am. To accommodate the early start, gates at Melbourne Park will open from 9:00 am, allowing fans ample time to enter and settle in before the action begins.

Heat Precautions and Fan Advisory

With temperatures forecast to rise into the low 30s Celsius by midday and peak in the late afternoon, tournament organizers are strongly encouraging attendees to prepare for a warm day. Key recommendations include:

  • Wearing hats and applying sunscreen to protect against sun exposure.
  • Staying hydrated by using the numerous water refill stations available throughout the precinct.
  • Allowing extra time for arrival to avoid rush and heat stress.
  • Utilizing shade, misting fans, and designated cooling areas on-site to stay comfortable.

Australian Open Tournament Director Craig Tiley emphasized the strategic timing, stating, "We expect pleasant conditions tomorrow morning, in the mid-20s, and will start play earlier and take advantage of the more temperate conditions." This move is part of broader efforts to enhance heat management at the event.

Heat Stress Scale Implementation

To scientifically assess and respond to heat conditions, Tennis Australia introduced the Heat Stress Scale (HSS) in 2019. This innovative system measures four key climate factors:

  1. Air temperature
  2. Radiant heat
  3. Humidity
  4. Wind speed

By monitoring these elements across multiple locations at the venue, the HSS provides a scale from one to five to determine heat conditions, guiding decisions like schedule adjustments and safety protocols. This research-backed approach underscores the tournament's commitment to player welfare and spectator experience amid challenging weather.

Spectators are advised to take full advantage of the increased shade and cooling facilities available throughout Melbourne Park to ensure a safe and enjoyable day of tennis.
