GLASGOW: Hearts missed a golden opportunity to strengthen their grip on the Scottish Premiership title after being held to a 1-1 draw at Motherwell. The result leaves the door open for Celtic and Rangers, who face each other in the Old Firm derby on Sunday.
Title Race Implications
Hearts, aiming to become the first team outside the Old Firm to win the league since Aberdeen in 1984/85, saw their lead at the top cut to four points. However, Celtic can reduce the gap to just one point with a victory over Rangers. If Celtic win their remaining three games, including a final-day clash at home against Hearts, they will retain the title. Rangers, despite being eight points adrift with three matches left, are not mathematically eliminated.
Controversial Decision
Hearts manager Derek McInnes was left furious after his side was denied a late penalty. Referee Steven McLean, after consulting VAR, decided not to award a spot-kick when Motherwell's Tawanda Maswanhise appeared to step on Hearts' Alexandros Kyzirids in the box. McInnes was booked for his protest.
Match Action
For the fifth consecutive game, Hearts had to come from behind. Motherwell took the lead in the 25th minute when Stephen Kingsley turned the ball into his own net under pressure from Ibrahim Said. Hearts had an early chance when Lawrence Shankland fired wide with the goal gaping, but he made amends just before halftime with a smart finish after Calum Ward parried Michael Steinwender's strike.
Motherwell thought they had regained the lead early in the second half through O'Donnell, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Hearts pushed for a winner but could not find the breakthrough, meaning they must now beat Falkirk on Wednesday to keep their title hopes alive.
