FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has pledged to deliver the return of V8 engines to the FIA Formula One World Championship, making the announcement ahead of the Pirelli British Grand Prix at Silverstone this weekend. The race is expected to draw a record crowd of over half a million fans to the iconic circuit.
Ben Sulayem's Commitment to V8 Engines
In a statement, Ben Sulayem emphasized the FIA's dedication to keeping Formula 1 at the forefront of global motorsport development. "As we look to the future, the FIA is ensuring Formula 1 remains at the forefront of global motorsport development bringing thrilling racing to a growing number of fans around the world, and I am committed to delivering the return of V8 engines, which will deliver for fans by being lighter, cheaper, safer and louder," he said.
Historic Context of Silverstone
Ben Sulayem also highlighted the significance of the British Grand Prix and Silverstone Circuit, noting that the first British Grand Prix took place 100 years ago at Brooklands in 1926. "From safety to technology, our sport has continually evolved while remaining true to the spirit of racing that defines it," he added. Silverstone hosted the first FIA Formula One World Championship race in 1950, and in 2027, it will see the return of the FIA World Endurance Championship with the newly added 6 Hours of Silverstone.
British Drivers and Grassroots Development
This weekend's race features five British drivers competing on home soil: George Russell, Lewis Hamilton, Lando Norris, Oliver Bearman, and Arvid Lindblad. The FIA is also strengthening grassroots motorsport participation through its competitions and the FIA Global Karting Plan, aiming to inspire the next generation of competitors and fans.
Long-Term Vision for Formula 1
As the FIA Formula One World Championship continues to expand globally, the FIA remains focused on its long-term sustainability, ensuring world-class competition, advancing safety and sustainability, and supporting motorsport development at every level.
