England, Ghana eye last 32 as Portugal seek lift-off

England will aim to become the latest World Cup heavyweight to secure a spot in the knockout rounds on Tuesday, while Portugal attempt to revive their campaign after a disappointing opening draw. A day after Argentina and France advanced to the last 32, England take on Ghana in Group L, knowing victory will guarantee their place in the next phase.

England's confident start

England launched their tournament with a stylish 4-2 win over Croatia, a result that has instilled fresh belief in the Three Lions camp as they chase a first major championship triumph in 60 years. Captain Harry Kane scored twice, and Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham also found the net. Midfielder Declan Rice believes Thomas Tuchel's squad can match any team in the competition.

Rice emphasized the importance of replicating their second-half performance against Croatia. "We know as players the level, we know what's required, and that second-half performance was probably the benchmark for us in terms of having to start the game at that level," Rice said. "We believe that if we can do that from the opening minute, with the players that we also have to come on and finish the game, we can beat any opponent in the world. We want to be confident in our abilities and what we can do on the pitch."

German manager Thomas Tuchel acknowledged the pressure of a World Cup campaign. "There are emotions involved and you can at some point feel the tension and feel the pressure. I hope we can cope with it, accept it and turn it around," Tuchel said. "I heard also a lot about it and I feel of course the excitement and the pressure, but I feel that we have so many winners and so many players who are experienced to cope with the pressure."

Ghana's threat and group dynamics

England will be wary of Ghana's Antoine Semenyo, the London-born Manchester City winger who leads the Black Stars' attack. Ghana, who beat Panama 1-0 in their opener, can also qualify for the knockout rounds with a victory at Foxborough, just outside Boston. In the other Group L match, 2018 runners-up Croatia could be eliminated if they lose to Panama and Ghana avoid defeat against England.

Croatia captain Luka Modric is set to play his 200th international match, joining an elite group. Only three men's players have more caps: Cristiano Ronaldo (229), Lionel Messi (201), and Bader Al-Mutawa (202 for Kuwait).

Portugal's response needed

Portugal will attempt to move past a turbulent first week when they face Uzbekistan in Houston. Despite being tournament favorites with a star-studded squad led by veteran Ronaldo, Portugal struggled to a 1-1 draw with the Democratic Republic of Congo. Ronaldo's lackluster performance reignited debate about his place in the starting lineup, as he has not scored in his last 10 matches at major tournaments.

Coach Roberto Martinez continues to support his 41-year-old captain. "He's a good example for us, for all of us," Martinez said. "So he really wants to keep on improving, to contribute to the team, and he's really a role model for our team." However, Martinez stopped short of confirming Ronaldo will start against Uzbekistan, noting he had not informed the players of the lineup.

Martinez believes the disappointment from the draw with DRC will motivate Portugal. "The feeling of frustration that we all had as a team, the feeling of disappointment after the game, probably that's the best starting point to prepare for the next game," he said. Uzbekistan, making their World Cup debut, are heavy underdogs.
