Croatia secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Panama on Tuesday, eliminating the Central Americans from World Cup contention while keeping their own hopes of reaching the last 32 alive. The match, played in Foxborough, saw Ante Budimir score the decisive goal in the 54th minute.
Match Overview
Croatia, who reached the semifinals in both 2018 and 2022, were looking to bounce back from a 4-2 defeat to England in their opening Group L game. Panama, coached by Danish-born Thomas Christiansen, had implemented a tight defensive structure but were ultimately undone by Budimir's finish.
"You cannot win a match if you don't score," said Christiansen, who expressed pride in his players' performance against the higher-ranked Croatian side. "These players, after these two World Cup matches, won't be where they are today."
First Half: Panama Threatens
Panama nearly took the lead in the 23rd minute when Jose Luis Rodriguez guided a header towards goal, but Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic tipped the ball onto the crossbar with outstretched fingertips. Luka Modric, making his 200th international appearance, saw an early headed effort sail over the bar.
Second Half: Croatia Takes Control
The second half marked a clear momentum shift. In the 54th minute, Josip Stanisic delivered a cross that Budimir tapped in, sending the capacity crowd of 43,000 in Toronto, which had a strong Croatian majority, into celebration. Croatia nearly doubled their lead minutes later when Modric sent Marco Pasalic speeding towards goal with a perfectly weighted pass. Pasalic's first effort was saved by goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera, and his off-balance rebound attempt went well over the bar.
Panama's Struggle in Front of Goal
Panama pressed for an equalizer but failed to find the net, extending their World Cup goalless streak. They will face England in their final match of the tournament on Friday. Croatia, now on three points, face Ghana on Friday for a place in the final 32. Ghana moved onto four points after holding England to a goalless draw earlier.
Modric's Milestone and Leadership
Modric, 40, was substituted after 81 minutes, receiving a roar of applause from the Toronto crowd. After the final whistle, his teammates lifted him in the air. Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic praised Modric's humility: "It could be that Luka might want to avoid all this. He's very humble, he's very simple. He truly is not for major celebrations, but I'm very glad that we marked this today." Dalic described Modric as a "born leader" who does not impose his leadership role on the squad. "That's what makes Luka a quality person," Dalic added.
