After a prolonged period of dry weather, Pakistan is finally set to receive significant rainfall and snowfall as a powerful weather system moves in. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has confirmed that a westerly wave is now influencing the western and upper parts of the country, with its intensity expected to increase starting tonight.
System to Persist Until New Year's Day
According to MET officials, this active weather system is forecast to persist in the upper regions of the country until Monday, January 1. The overall rain-bearing system is expected to affect various areas from today through Tuesday, January 2, providing much-needed precipitation after the dry spell.
Impact on Punjab and Major Cities
Director Meteorology Abdul Aziz stated that the system will impact upper regions as well as numerous cities in Punjab. Specifically, residents of Lahore can anticipate rainfall on Wednesday and Thursday. This brings hope for a respite from the cold, dry conditions that have dominated the region.
Rain, Thunderstorms, and Snowfall Forecast
The MET Office has issued a detailed forecast predicting rain accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms. Furthermore, snowfall over the hilly areas is likely in several key regions:
- Northern Balochistan
- Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK)
- Gilgit-Baltistan
- Kashmir
Meanwhile, fog in patches may persist during morning and night hours over the plain areas of northeast Punjab, south Punjab, and upper Sindh. The rest of the country is expected to experience generally cold and cloudy conditions under the influence of this system.
This widespread weather activity marks a significant shift in the national climate pattern and is expected to improve air quality and water reserves in the affected regions.
