PMD Predicts Rain, Snow in Upper Pakistan from Jan 14

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a significant weather forecast, predicting a change in conditions for the upper parts of the country. The department anticipates the arrival of a fresh western disturbance that is expected to bring rain, wind, and snowfall starting from the evening of Tuesday, January 14, 2026.

Detailed Forecast and Expected Impacts

According to the official advisory, the weather system will influence several key regions. Rain-wind and thunderstorms are likely in Islamabad, the Potohar region, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan. Furthermore, heavy rainfall and snowfall are specifically predicted over the hills in Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan. The disturbance is also expected to cause rain and thunderstorms in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK).

The PMD has outlined the probable impacts of this incoming weather. There is a risk of flash flooding in local nullahs and streams in the vulnerable hilly areas of Kashmir and KPK. Travelers, particularly those on motorways and in mountainous regions, are advised to exercise extreme caution due to expected slippery road conditions and reduced visibility. The advisory also warns of potential damage to loose structures and standing crops.

Temperature Outlook and Advisory

Alongside the precipitation, a drop in daytime temperatures is forecasted for most parts of the country from Wednesday, January 15, onwards. However, night temperatures are expected to see a slight rise during the rainy period.

The meteorological department has issued clear advisories for the public and relevant authorities. Farmers are advised to manage their activities accordingly to protect their crops. Tourists and the general public are urged to avoid unnecessary travel during the forecasted period. All concerned authorities, including the Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs), are recommended to remain vigilant and take necessary precautionary measures to mitigate risks.

Current Weather and Broader Context

Prior to this new system, the weather across most of Pakistan remained predominantly dry. However, shallow fog was reported in some plain areas of Punjab and upper Sindh. The minimum recorded temperatures on Monday included 04°C in Leh, 05°C in Skardu, and 07°C in Astore and Gupis.

This forecast is critical for planning and safety across the northern and western regions of Pakistan. The prediction of heavy snowfall in Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir is particularly significant, as it can affect transportation, power supply, and daily life. Residents in the affected areas should stay informed through official PMD updates and prepare for the changing winter conditions.
