First Winter Snowfall Blankets Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Mountains
First Snowfall of Winter Hits KP Mountains

The mountainous landscapes of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa witnessed a dramatic and welcome transformation on Tuesday as the season's first significant snowfall and rainfall swept across the province. This weather shift ended a prolonged dry period, bringing a sharp drop in temperatures and widespread joy among residents and the farming community.

Snowfall Across Key Districts

Light to moderate snowfall was reported in the high-altitude areas of North and South Waziristan. Key locations included Razmak, Angoor Adda, Shawal, Khamrang, Raghzai, Kaniguram, Badr, and Ladha. The fresh white blanket dramatically enhanced the natural beauty of these mountain ranges. In South Waziristan specifically, the snowfall began overnight in Birmal, Shakai, Ladha, Sam, Makeen, Shawal, and Pir Ghar.

Similar conditions were observed in Upper and Lower Dir, where rain lashed urban centers while snow settled on surrounding mountains. Popular tourist spots like Kumrat Valley, Jahaz Banda, Badgoi, Lowari Tunnel, Kalpani, and Shahai received snowfall. The picturesque region of Chitral also experienced rain and snow in the Kalash valleys, along the Lowari Tunnel Road, and in areas such as Madak Lasht, Garam Chashma, Yarkhun, Broghil, Shandur, upper Torkhow, and Terich.

Agricultural Relief and Local Impact

Farmers and landowners across the province expressed immense relief and described the precipitation as a "mercy from nature." They emphasized that this first winter rain and snow are critically important for agriculture. The moisture from rain and eventual snowmelt is expected to significantly improve soil conditions, directly benefiting wheat crops which are currently at a sensitive growth stage. Improved yields are also anticipated for orchard produce including pine nuts (chilghoza), apples, peaches, and plums.

While the weather brought happiness, especially in water-scarce localities, it also presented challenges. The rising cold has led to a sharp increase in fuel prices in areas like Lower Chitral, exacerbated by a scarcity of firewood. Additionally, snowfall in upper regions has made some remote roads slippery, partially affecting movement.

Authorities Issue Weather Advisory

District authorities in affected regions stated that full preparations are in place to handle any emergencies. However, the meteorological forecast for the next 24 hours predicts more rain with strong winds and thunderstorms across much of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, with further snowfall likely in upper mountainous areas. Fog may also develop in the plains.

Authorities have issued a warning regarding potential road blockages, landslides, and avalanches in hilly regions. They are urging all travelers and tourists to exercise extreme caution while venturing out. Despite the warnings, the cold winds and scenic beauty have already prompted many tourists to head towards popular spots to enjoy the early winter weather.
