Authorities in Lahore have rolled out a comprehensive security plan in anticipation of the upcoming Basant festivities. The city police are taking stringent measures to ensure public order and safety during the traditional kite-flying season.
Enhanced Security Measures and Public Warnings
Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Lahore, Bilal Siddique Kamyana, has issued clear directives for a secure environment. The police force will maintain a high state of alert across the city. Drones will be deployed for aerial surveillance to monitor large gatherings and key areas, providing real-time situational awareness to the command and control center.
In a firm warning, the CCPO stated that anyone found using banned metal or chemical-coated kite strings (dor) will face strict legal action. These strings have been responsible for numerous fatalities and serious injuries in the past. The police have also been instructed to take decisive action against individuals involved in aerial firing, a dangerous practice often associated with such celebrations.
Traffic Management and Operational Plans
A detailed traffic management scheme has been formulated to handle the expected increase in vehicular movement. The plan aims to prevent gridlocks and ensure smooth flow on major roads, especially around popular Basant spots. Police officials have been tasked with implementing this plan effectively.
Furthermore, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Operations, Ali Nasir Rizvi, has reviewed the security arrangements. He emphasized that all field officers must ensure the implementation of the security plan on the ground. The operations include increased patrolling, snap checking, and the establishment of special check-posts in sensitive zones.

The security preparations follow the Punjab government's conditional permission for Basant celebrations. The government has allowed the festival with the explicit condition that only safe, cotton kite strings are used. The current crackdown is a direct enforcement of this condition.
