Karachi's Roads Turn Deadly: 100 Lives Lost in Traffic Accidents This Year
The bustling metropolis of Karachi is grappling with a severe road safety crisis, as recent tragic incidents have pushed the death toll from traffic accidents to a staggering 100 so far this year. In a series of devastating crashes, five individuals lost their lives, including two brothers from an impoverished family, underscoring the urgent need for improved traffic management and enforcement in the city.
Fatal Accidents Involving Heavy Vehicles and Hit-and-Run Cases
The latest spate of deadly accidents involved a trailer, a cement mixer, and unidentified vehicles, with drivers fleeing the scenes in most cases. This pattern highlights the dangers posed by heavy vehicles and the weak traffic enforcement mechanisms in Karachi, raising serious concerns about public safety on the roads.
Heartbreaking Incident on Site Super Highway
In one of the most tragic events, a trailer ran over a donkey cart on the Site Super Highway, resulting in the deaths of two brothers: 24-year-old Tariq and 14-year-old Zameer. Their 17-year-old brother, Hakeem, was critically injured in the accident. The victims, residents of Hangoro Goth with ancestral roots in Dadu, belonged to a poor family and earned their livelihood by selling grass purchased from the vegetable market. The trailer driver fled the scene, but police have seized the vehicle and launched a search operation to arrest the suspect.
Other Recent Accidents Across the City
In another distressing incident near Ibrahim Hyderi Bridge at Korangi Crossing, a cement mixer rammed into a motorcycle, leaving two riders critically injured. The injured were identified as Muhammad Ibrahim, 35, and Adnan, 30, an executive event management employee at a private TV channel. The driver escaped, and police have impounded the cement mixer.
Elsewhere in the city, a 45-year-old motorcyclist, Abid, was killed near Shaheen Hotel in Sher Shah after being hit by an unidentified vehicle. In a separate incident on the Lyari Expressway, 13-year-old Ahmed Raza lost his life after being struck by a speeding unidentified vehicle. Additionally, 40-year-old Qasim was killed and another rider injured in a traffic accident on the Super Highway near DHA City, with police currently investigating the incident.

According to figures released by Chhipa, traffic accidents have claimed 100 lives in Karachi so far this year, painting a grim picture of the city's road safety situation.
