The much-anticipated arrival of winter precipitation has finally broken a persistent dry spell in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, bringing relief and a sharp drop in temperatures across the region. After over three months of arid conditions, the first significant rains and snowfall occurred from late Saturday night into Sunday, dramatically altering the weather pattern.
Rains and Snowfall Transform AJK's Landscape
The long-awaited weather change manifested as rainfall in the plains and the season's first snowfall in the upper mountainous reaches. Key areas including Mirpur, Muzaffarabad, Kotli, Bhimbher, and Rawalakot experienced light to moderate rains, often accompanied by mild thunderstorms. The scenic Neelam and Leepa valleys witnessed their first snowfall since late Saturday, with the mercury plunging and covering the high terrain in a white blanket.
This sudden shift forced residents to switch to heavy winter clothing almost overnight. The inclement weather led to a significant dip in daytime temperatures, while the night chill in the top mountainous areas became particularly intense. According to local journalist Khawaja Shahid Ahmed, speaking from Neelam Valley, the sudden cold was so harsh that locals in the fully chilled valleys were compelled to stay indoors to avoid its negative impacts on daily life.
End of a Prolonged Dry Spell and Its Impacts
The region had been suffering under a continuous dry weather pattern for approximately the last three months. This prolonged dryness had several adverse effects. It triggered a rise in seasonal diseases such as allergies, flu, and fever in various parts of AJK. Furthermore, the lack of rain caused water levels in rivers and dams to recede to alarmingly low levels, raising concerns about water resources.
The recent precipitation, therefore, marks a critical turning point. The Metrological Department has forecasted that this wet weather pattern is likely to continue, predicting more rainfall in the plains and additional snowfall in the mountainous areas over the next 72 hours.
Similar Weather Pattern in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
This shift is not isolated to AJK. Similar weather activity was reported in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, ending a prolonged dry spell there as well. In Swat and Dir, rainfall in lower areas and snowfall in the upper regions intensified the cold. Popular tourist destinations like Malam Jabba, Gabin Jabba, Kumrat Valley, and Lowari Top received snowfall, enhancing the natural beauty and attracting tourists eager to enjoy the winter landscapes.
The break in the dry weather brings a mix of challenges and benefits. While the cold snap requires adaptation and poses difficulties, especially in high-altitude areas, it also promises to replenish water sources, suppress seasonal illnesses, and boost tourism in the picturesque northern regions of Pakistan.
