In a significant move to revolutionize public transport and regional connectivity, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has given the green light to major railway development projects. Chief Minister Sohail Afridi presided over a crucial meeting at the KP House in Islamabad to finalize plans for new train services and the revival of historic infrastructure.
Multi-Million Dollar Kohat-Kharlachi Rail Link Approved
The centerpiece of the development plan is the new 192-kilometer railway track from Kohat to Kharlachi. The project, with an estimated cost of $642 million, is slated for completion within a two-year timeframe. Officials briefed the meeting that the feasibility study for this vital link has been successfully concluded, and the process of acquiring the necessary land is currently in progress.
Addressing the attendees, Chief Minister Sohail Afridi emphasized that the Kohat–Kharlachi train service is an urgent public need. He stated that this initiative will dramatically improve travel facilities for citizens and serve as a catalyst for enhanced trade and economic activity across the region.
Boosting Tourism with Safari Train and Station Revamps
The meeting also delved into innovative strategies to promote tourism. Detailed discussions were held on operating a Safari Train on the scenic 32-kilometer Jamrud–Landi Kotal railway track. This initiative aims to attract tourists and showcase the province's natural beauty.
Furthermore, plans were reviewed for the comprehensive rehabilitation of historic railway stations throughout Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. This includes projects focused on improving cleanliness, undertaking renovations, enhancing beautification, and developing green belts along the railway tracks to improve the travel experience and environmental aesthetics.
Strengthening Coordination for Future Projects
Chief Minister Afridi issued clear directives to the concerned authorities, instructing them to prepare comprehensive plans with definitive timelines for all railway projects. He stressed the importance of taking concrete steps to extend train services to other major cities within the province.
The meeting reinforced the need for close coordination and cooperation between the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government and Pakistan Railways. CM Afridi reaffirmed the provincial government's full support for all initiatives aimed at improving public transport and facilitating citizens.
The high-level meeting was attended by key officials including Advisor to the CM on Finance Muzammil Aslam, Chief Secretary Shahab Ali Shah, Additional Chief Secretary Planning and Development Ikramullah, the Secretary of Pakistan Railways, and senior officers from the Transport Department.
