A solemn yet powerful procession filled the streets of Sukkur on Saturday as thousands gathered to commemorate the 18th death anniversary of former Prime Minister Shaheed Benazir Bhutto. The event, marked by speeches from senior Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leaders, served as a reaffirmation of her political vision and enduring legacy.

Leaders Salute an Unforgettable Legacy

Senior PPP leader Syed Khurshid Ahmed Shah, in a statement issued on the anniversary, declared that Benazir Bhutto's services for the nation, its democracy, and its people remain unforgettable. He emphasized that her lifelong struggle was dedicated to establishing democracy, ensuring peace, fostering prosperity, and strengthening national defense.

"She transferred power from dictators to the people," Shah stated, framing her mission as foundational to modern Pakistan. He stressed that democracy is the essential path toward achieving national security, peace, progress, and prosperity. The PPP leader vowed that party members would continue to work tirelessly for democracy, peace, and development, guided by her enduring vision.

A Procession Reflecting Unity and Resolve

The commemorative march, organized by the PPP City Sukkur chapter, began at Lab-e-Mehran Sukkur with its destination set for Garhi Khuda Bakhsh Bhutto. The procession was notable for its scale and the diverse makeup of its participants.

Barrister Arsalan Islam Sheikh highlighted that the march symbolized deep devotion, loyalty, and a firm democratic resolve. He pointed out the significant participation from Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs, Christians, and other minority communities, calling Benazir Bhutto a true symbol of unity and equality for all religions and social classes.

The march was led by prominent figures including Syed Nasir Hussain Shah and Nauman Islam Sheikh. They were joined by:

  • Members of the National and Provincial Assemblies (MNAs and MPAs)
  • Local government representatives
  • Women workers of the party
  • A large number of party loyalists and citizens

Renewed Commitments and Political Tributes

Mayor of Sukkur, addressing the participants, stated that the sacrifices made by Benazir Bhutto form the very foundation of the Constitution, Parliament, and the supremacy of the people in Pakistan. He asserted that her ideology continues to live on and that the day's procession represented a renewal of the collective commitment to her vision.

He further outlined that the core tenets of PPP's manifesto—democracy, federalism, the protection of people's rights, and the promotion of interfaith harmony—are direct reflections of her principles. The event commenced with a press briefing at Lab-e-Mehran where the media was acknowledged for its role in highlighting the struggles for democracy and the sacrifices of martyrs.

In a separate show of respect, a delegation from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) also visited Sukkur to pay tribute to the slain leader. The procession proceeded peacefully and concluded at its intended destination, marking a day of reflection and political solidarity.
