PESHAWAR: Sikandar Hayat Sherpao, the Chairman of the Qaumi Watan Party (QWP) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has firmly rejected the federal government's assertions regarding economic development, stating that the harsh ground realities contradict such claims.
Inflation Leaves People Struggling for Basic Meals
Addressing a public gathering in Mingora, Swat on Monday, Sherpao launched a sharp critique on the prevailing economic conditions. He emphasized that soaring inflation and a drastic reduction in purchasing power have made it impossible for ordinary citizens to feed their children. The QWP leader accused the government of failing to provide any relief to the masses, forcing the underprivileged to run from pillar to post just to arrange two basic meals for their families.
Criticism of Provincial and Federal Neglect
Sherpao did not spare the provincial government either, alleging that it is more focused on achieving its political objectives than serving the poor or safeguarding the interests of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He claimed that the province's resources are being squandered on political gatherings and activities, with the ruling PTI showing little concern for public welfare.
Turning his attention to the federation, Sherpao accused the federal government of deliberately ignoring Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which he said has lagged far behind in development. He alleged a clear bias, stating that Punjab receives preferential treatment in the allocation of funds and projects. "This discriminatory attitude will deepen the sense of deprivation among the residents of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa," he warned, adding that such an approach weakens the federation of Pakistan.
Deteriorating Law and Order and Divisive Policies
Expressing grave concern, Sherpao highlighted the sharply deteriorating law and order situation in the province in 2025. He stated that the government's writ is shrinking daily, with targeted killings and lawlessness becoming the norm, particularly in the southern districts.
He also criticized the ban on the transportation of wheat flour from Punjab to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, arguing that such steps fuel harmful provincialism and exacerbate inter-provincial tensions.
In a significant political development during the event, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Fazal Rehman Nono announced his decision to join the QWP along with his family members and supporters.
