A judge on a two-member bench of the Lahore High Court (LHC) recused himself on Monday from hearing a petition challenging the confiscation of assets belonging to Moonis Elahi, son of former Punjab Chief Minister Parvez Elahi. Following the recusal, the two-member bench ceased to function, marking the second instance where a division bench has declined to hear the matter. An earlier two-member bench had also recused itself from the petition.
Case Background
The case, filed by Qaisara Elahi, came up for hearing before a division bench headed by Justice Tariq Nadeem. During the proceedings, Justice Ali Zia Bajwa expressed his inability to hear the case and recused himself. Subsequently, the bench referred the matter to the Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court with a recommendation to constitute a new bench to hear the petition.
Petition Details
Qaisara Elahi has challenged an accountability court’s decision ordering the confiscation of assets belonging to her son, Moonis Elahi. In her petition, she requested the court to set aside the accountability court’s ruling and declare it void. The petition also raised concerns over the legality of the confiscation process.
Separately, the Sindh Inspector General of Police met with a Hindu Panchayat delegation to discuss concerns of the minority community.
