Powerful Earthquakes Hit Venezuela, Collapse Buildings in Caracas

A pair of powerful earthquakes rattled Venezuela on Wednesday evening, causing buildings to collapse in the capital city of Caracas. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported the first tremor at magnitude 7.1, with its epicenter located west of the community of Morón along the country's Caribbean coast, approximately 168 kilometers (104 miles) west of Caracas. The quake struck at a depth of 13 kilometers (8 miles). Minutes later, a second, even stronger earthquake measuring magnitude 7.5 hit the region. This second quake had a depth of 10 kilometers and its epicenter was situated 16 kilometers (10 miles) southwest of Morón.

Tsunami Alerts Issued

In the wake of the seismic events, the US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued tsunami alerts for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, urging residents in coastal areas to be vigilant. The tremors were felt strongly in Caracas, where panicked residents evacuated swaying buildings and remained on the streets, many visibly shocked. Entire walls had collapsed, exposing furniture and interiors to public view. Dust columns rose from two neighborhoods in the capital, areas typically bustling with restaurants and businesses.

Government Response and Casualties

Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello confirmed that the earthquakes were felt in several states and described alarming situations in the Altamira neighborhood of Caracas, where homes and buildings had collapsed. He urged the public to stay outdoors due to the risk of aftershocks further damaging structures. Cabello also indicated that there were injuries, appealing to motorists to clear roads for ambulances and emergency vehicles. “We understand that some people may be desperate, but we are acting according to protocols to activate aid and rescue efforts to help those who need it most,” Cabello stated on state television. He added, “Be very careful with children and the elderly; call each other and check that no one has been harmed.”

Widespread Impact

The earthquakes were also felt in neighboring Colombia, according to AFP journalists. The USGS recorded the initial quake at 7.1 magnitude, followed by the 7.5-magnitude tremor. The depth and proximity of the second quake likely contributed to the significant damage observed in Caracas. Emergency services are currently working at the site of collapsed buildings, and rescue operations are underway. The full extent of casualties and structural damage remains unclear as assessments continue.
