Ivan Beerkus and Angela Nikolau, the couple who climbed to the top of New York City's Empire State Building before becoming engaged, have been released from custody after appearing in court on multiple felony charges linked to the high-profile stunt. The pair were released on supervised release following their appearance in Manhattan Criminal Court.
Court Appearance and Release
Video recorded outside the courthouse showed the couple holding hands before sharing a kiss, drawing further public attention after their dramatic rooftop proposal. According to reports, prosecutors have charged the couple with multiple felonies, including reckless endangerment and burglary. They did not enter pleas during their initial court appearance, and the case will continue through the legal process.
The July 1 Stunt
The climbers were arrested after scaling the Empire State Building's 1,454-foot spire on July 1. During the climb, they unfurled a banner carrying a peace message before Beerkus proposed to Nikolau near the top of the landmark. The stunt prompted a significant emergency response as New York Police Department officers climbed the structure to safely detain the pair.
Legal and Public Impact
Authorities have not disclosed how the pair accessed the restricted sections of the building before carrying out the climb. The incident temporarily drew crowds around the Midtown Manhattan landmark as emergency personnel worked to resolve the situation safely. The proposal quickly gained widespread attention across social media, where videos and photographs of the climb circulated extensively. However, the legal proceedings now shift the focus from the viral moment to the criminal charges stemming from the unauthorised ascent. The couple remain on supervised release as the case proceeds through the New York court system.
