Pakistan Arrests Dozens, Fears Afghan Retaliation After Air Strikes

Pakistan Ramps Up Security Measures Following Cross-Border Air Strikes

Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry announced on Wednesday that Pakistan has significantly enhanced its security posture and detained dozens of suspected militants amid growing concerns about retaliatory terrorist attacks. This heightened alert comes in the wake of Pakistan's recent air strikes on targets within Afghanistan over the weekend.

High Alert Status and Cross-Border Tensions

"Our forces are on high-alert to combat any attacks," stated Chaudhry during his briefing. "You know the militants always react whenever we go after their hideouts in Afghanistan." The minister emphasized that Pakistan conducted the air strikes against what it identified as terrorist bases responsible for a series of recent suicide bombings on Pakistani territory.

Islamabad has consistently accused Kabul of permitting militant groups to operate from Afghan soil, using it as a safe haven—a charge that Afghanistan firmly denies, maintaining that the militancy is an internal issue for Pakistan. These diplomatic tensions escalated further on Tuesday when Pakistani and Afghan forces exchanged fire along their shared border, with each nation blaming the other for initiating the confrontation.

Recent Attacks and Security Operations

The security situation has been exacerbated by a spate of recent terrorist incidents, including:

  • An ambush on a police vehicle in Kohat that resulted in the deaths of five officers and two civilians
  • A suicide bombing at a security checkpoint that killed two policemen

Chaudhry pointed to these retaliatory attacks as evidence supporting Pakistan's claims about militant networks operating from Afghanistan. "The retaliatory attacks by terrorists proved Islamabad's case that they had linkages in Afghanistan," he asserted, noting that security forces had successfully thwarted several planned attacks in recent weeks and made numerous arrests, including Afghan nationals.

Intensified Security Measures and Intelligence Warnings

Security forces have dramatically increased the tempo of search operations and intelligence-driven missions across the country. "We have almost doubled our search operations across Pakistan," revealed one intelligence official who spoke on condition of anonymity. "We have been given a strong caution about more terror attacks in our official communications."

The minister confirmed that "dozens of suspected militants, their handlers and their facilitators" have been apprehended in these operations. Multiple intelligence sources have issued alerts warning of a potential surge in terrorist activities in the coming days, with possible targets including:

  1. Urban population centers
  2. Public markets and commercial areas
  3. Security force installations and personnel
  4. Places of worship and religious gatherings

Regional Security Concerns and Statistical Trends

Another intelligence official expressed particular concern about the geographical spread of potential attacks, noting: "Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan were already under terror attacks and we fear that Afghanistan will retaliate against Pakistan through terror networks in Punjab and Sindh as well."

Militancy represents a growing security challenge for Pakistan, with attack numbers showing a disturbing upward trajectory. According to data from the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED), a global monitoring organization:

  • Terrorist attacks in Pakistan increased nearly fourfold from 658 incidents in 2022 to 2,425 in 2025
  • Attacks specifically attributed to the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) rose more than sevenfold during the same period, from 118 to 838 incidents

This statistical trend underscores the escalating security environment that Pakistani authorities now confront as they balance cross-border military actions with domestic counterterrorism operations and heightened defensive measures against anticipated retaliatory strikes.
