KARACHI: In a significant move to streamline airport procedures, the Federal Ombudsman's office has called for a major push to educate travelers about required documents before they embark on international journeys. This directive aims to prevent last-minute inconveniences and ensure a smooth departure process.
Key Directives for Smoother Travel
Amir Ahmad Shaikh, the Member-in-Charge and Provincial Coordinator for Sindh, chaired a high-level review meeting at Jinnah International Airport on Tuesday. He emphasized that proactive sensitization of passengers is crucial. Shaikh stated that individuals planning to travel abroad must be fully informed in advance about all documentary and codal requirements to avoid any difficulties at the airport.
The meeting saw participation from senior officials of multiple key agencies, including the Pakistan Airports Authority, Airport Security Force (ASF), Customs, Anti Narcotics Force (ANF), Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), Passport and Immigration, and the Overseas Pakistanis Foundation.
Strengthening Coordination and Accountability
Amir Ahmad Shaikh stressed the need for close coordination among all relevant organizations working at the airport. He directed that airport authorities should regularly visit the One Window Facilitation Desk (OWFD) and maintain tight links with all agencies to resolve issues swiftly as they arise.
He also placed responsibility on travel agents, stating they should be held accountable for providing all necessary information and guidance to their clients to ensure hassle-free travel. The Ombudsman's team was briefed that representatives from 11 relevant agencies are present at the OWFD to provide on-the-spot facilities and immediate resolution of passenger issues.
Ongoing and Future Facilitation Projects
The inspection team was informed about several initiatives aimed at improving passenger experience. A comprehensive coordination mechanism is already operational at Jinnah International Airport, with separate monthly meetings convened to review security, safety, and administrative matters.
For passenger guidance, digital screens are being installed throughout the airport premises. Furthermore, a project is being designed for the upgradation of the airport infrastructure and the construction of an additional commercial area to better facilitate visitors.
The Member-in-Charge appreciated the efforts of the involved organizations and expressed hope that these measures would significantly improve service delivery. Following the meeting, the Ombudsman's inspection team conducted a detailed visit of the airport, inspecting various counters and service areas. Team members also interacted directly with passengers to inquire about available facilities and any issues they encountered.
