ANF Conducts Major Drug Destruction Ceremony in Sheikhupura
The Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) held its annual drug disposal ceremony in Sheikhupura on Thursday, destroying a massive haul of illicit substances. More than 18 tonnes of various narcotics and over 169,000 litres of liquor were incinerated during the event, marking a significant blow to drug trafficking networks in the region.
Substances Destroyed and Environmental Considerations
The confiscated materials included a wide range of dangerous drugs such as hashish, heroin, crystal meth (commonly known as ice), poppy husk, and cannabis, alongside the large volume of liquor. In a move to prioritize environmental protection, the ANF utilized a modern industrial incinerator for the destruction process. This method was specifically chosen to minimize pollution and ensure the safe disposal of the narcotics without harming the local ecosystem.
High-Profile Attendance and Broader Enforcement Efforts
The ceremony was attended by notable officials including the Regional Director of ANF Punjab, the Director General of CNF Punjab, the Regional Police Officer (RPO) of Sheikhupura, the Bishop of Lahore, and the Vice Chancellor of the University of South Asia. Their presence underscored the collaborative effort against drug abuse. During the current year, ANF Punjab has made substantial strides in enforcement, arresting 590 drug traffickers and registering 463 cases. Courts have handed down life imprisonment to 35 high-profile traffickers, with an additional 132 receiving rigorous sentences, reflecting the severity of penalties for such crimes.
Preventive Campaigns and Educational Outreach
Beyond enforcement, the ANF has actively engaged in preventive measures. As part of its anti-drug awareness campaign, the force conducted seminars in more than 1,000 educational institutions, including colleges and universities. These initiatives aim to educate youth about the dangers of narcotics and foster a drug-free society, highlighting the ANF's comprehensive approach combining destruction, prosecution, and prevention.
