The newly appointed Italian Ambassador to Pakistan, Ugo Ciarlatani, has pledged to deepen Italy's political, economic and cultural engagement with Pakistan, describing the South Asian country as an important partner with significant potential for expanded bilateral cooperation. In his first message after assuming office, Ambassador-designate Ciarlatani said Pakistan holds strategic importance for Italy and the wider South Asian region, adding that the two countries enjoy a longstanding relationship founded on institutional dialogue, expanding economic cooperation, cultural exchanges and strong people-to-people ties.
Ambassador's Priorities and Focus Areas
Ciarlatani noted that the large and vibrant Pakistani community in Italy continues to make a valuable contribution to Italian society and the country’s economy, further strengthening bilateral relations. The ambassador said one of his foremost priorities would be to reinforce the partnership by promoting the full spectrum of Italy’s institutional, commercial and cultural engagement in Pakistan. He said the Italian Embassy in Islamabad would work closely with the Consulate General in Karachi, the Italian Trade Agency (ICE), the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, as well as public and private institutions, businesses, universities, research organisations and cultural bodies in both countries.
Economic Diplomacy as Key Focus
Highlighting economic diplomacy as a key focus of his tenure, Ambassador Ciarlatani said Pakistan’s youthful population, expanding market and growing economy offer promising opportunities for Italian investment and business cooperation. He identified energy, infrastructure, agribusiness, mechanical engineering, textiles, technology, vocational training and sustainability as priority sectors where bilateral collaboration could be significantly expanded. The ambassador also stressed the importance of cultural diplomacy, saying Italy’s rich heritage in language, art, archaeology, architecture, design, fashion, cinema, music, science and education would continue to serve as a bridge for strengthening mutual understanding between the two nations.
Support for Youth and Consular Services
Ciarlatani said particular emphasis would be placed on supporting young people through greater academic exchanges, student mobility, professional training and enhanced scientific and technological cooperation. He further pledged to improve and modernise consular services for both Italian citizens residing in Pakistan and Pakistani applicants seeking embassy services. Expressing confidence in the future of bilateral ties, he said Italy and Pakistan possess considerable untapped potential for cooperation and that sustained engagement would help open new avenues of partnership for the mutual benefit of both countries.
The ambassador said he was assuming his new responsibilities with a strong sense of duty and optimism, reaffirming Italy’s commitment to further strengthening its longstanding friendship with Pakistan through practical and sustained collaboration across multiple sectors.
