Iran declares administrative control over Strait of Hormuz
TEHRAN: Iran's chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said that the Strait of Hormuz will be administered by Tehran, state media reported on Tuesday. Ghalibaf stated that the strategic waterway will never return to its pre-war conditions, according to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA).
Statement by Iran's top negotiator
Ghalibaf, who also serves as Iran's Parliament Speaker, made the announcement during a press briefing. He asserted that the Strait of Hormuz will be administered by the Islamic Republic of Iran, in accordance with international law. The statement marks a significant shift in the status of one of the world's most vital oil transit chokepoints.
Implications for global oil trade
The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and Oman, handles about one-fifth of the world's oil supply. Iran's claim of sole administration could disrupt global energy markets and raise tensions with other Gulf states and international powers. The announcement follows recent conflicts in the region that have altered the strategic balance.
