China's military announced on Wednesday that it mobilized naval and air forces to expel a Dutch frigate, which it accused of illegally entering the Paracel Islands in the disputed South China Sea. The incident marks a further escalation in tensions over the strategically important waterway.
Alleged Incursion
According to a statement from the People's Liberation Army Southern Theater Command, the Dutch frigate's carrier-based helicopters repeatedly took off and intruded into China's airspace. Zhai Shichen, a spokesperson for the command, condemned the actions and urged the Netherlands to cease what he described as infringing and provocative acts.
We firmly oppose this and solemnly urge the Dutch side to immediately cease its infringing and provocative acts, Zhai said. He added that the Chinese military will resolutely safeguard national sovereignty and security.
Regional Tensions
The South China Sea is a region of overlapping territorial claims involving China, Taiwan, Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Brunei. The Paracel Islands are controlled by China but also claimed by Vietnam and Taiwan. The Dutch frigate's presence comes amid increased naval activity by Western nations in the area, including freedom of navigation operations.
China has consistently opposed what it views as unauthorized military incursions into its claimed waters and airspace. The Chinese military has vowed to take necessary measures to protect its territorial integrity. The Dutch government has not yet officially responded to the Chinese accusations.
This incident underscores the ongoing geopolitical frictions in the South China Sea, where military encounters between Chinese forces and those of other nations have become more frequent in recent years.
