PML-N Leader Penalized for Election Code Breach in Haripur
Senator Murtaza Javed Abbasi, a prominent leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), has faced financial penalties for violating the Election Commission of Pakistan's code of conduct. The incident occurred during the heated campaign for the by-election in the Haripur constituency.
The Official Notice and Fine
After being served with an official notice from the ECP, Senator Abbasi appeared before the District Monitoring Officer (DMO) to address the allegations. Following proceedings, the DMO found the senator in breach of the rules and imposed a fine of Rs40,000 on him. The officer gave clear instructions that the fine must be deposited into the government treasury by November 27. Furthermore, Abbasi was directed to submit the payment challan as official proof of compliance.
The Reason Behind the Action
The punitive action stems from a specific event during the senator's campaign activities. At a public gathering, Murtaza Javed Abbasi used inappropriate language directed against a female candidate who was also contesting the by-election. This use of derogatory remarks was deemed a clear violation of the ECP's code of conduct, which mandates respectful campaigning and strictly prohibits personal attacks, especially those targeting women in politics.
This case highlights the ECP's ongoing efforts to enforce discipline and ensure a fair and respectful electoral process during by-elections across Pakistan.
