US Embassy Issues Urgent Alert for Imminent Attack on Saudi Energy Hub
The United States embassy in Riyadh issued a stark warning on Tuesday, alerting to an imminent attack in the eastern Saudi city of Dhahran. This critical location is home to much of the kingdom's vital energy installations along the Gulf coast, making it a strategic target.
Emergency Security Alert and Immediate Instructions
In a post on its official X account, the embassy declared, "There is a threat of imminent missile and UAV attacks over Dhahran. Do not come to the US Consulate." The security alert, titled "Threat of Imminent Missile / UAV Attacks Over Dhahran," provided urgent instructions for individuals in the area.
The embassy advised people to take cover immediately in their residences on the lowest available floor and stay away from windows to minimize risk from potential blasts or shrapnel.
Escalating Tensions Following Embassy Drone Strike
This dire warning came just hours after the US mission in Riyadh itself was attacked. Two drones struck the embassy grounds, sparking a small fire and causing visible damage. AFP reporters in the Saudi capital observed smoke damage on the walls and roof of the embassy compound.
The drone attack is part of a broader wave of retaliatory strikes by Iran across the Gulf region. This escalation follows US and Israeli strikes four days prior that resulted in the death of Iran's supreme leader, triggering a widening regional conflict.
Heightened Security and Regional Fallout
In response to the attacks, security measures in Riyadh were significantly intensified. Saudi police swarmed the diplomatic quarter, conducting rigorous ID checks on everyone attempting to enter. Several key roads were blocked, including direct approaches to the US embassy, creating a lockdown atmosphere in the area.
Earlier on Tuesday, the US had already warned its citizens to evacuate the entire region, signaling deep concerns over the rapidly deteriorating security situation.
Critical Energy Infrastructure at Risk
The warning specifically for Dhahran underscores the grave threat to global energy supplies. Dhahran is a cornerstone of Saudi Arabia's energy sector, housing extensive oil fields and petroleum infrastructure along the eastern coast, directly across the Gulf from Iran.
This alert follows a major incident on Monday, when the massive Ras Tanura refinery on Saudi Arabia's Gulf coast was forced into a partial shutdown after a drone strike. The Ras Tanura complex, operated by the state oil giant Aramco, is one of the largest refineries in the entire Middle East.
As the world's biggest oil exporter, any sustained attack on Saudi Arabia's eastern energy installations could have severe repercussions for global oil markets and economic stability. The situation remains fluid and highly dangerous, with the US embassy's warning highlighting the immediate peril facing both diplomatic personnel and critical industrial assets.
