Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to attend the signing ceremony of a landmark agreement between Iran and the United States in Geneva, official sources said on Monday. According to sources, the prime minister will travel to Switzerland accompanied by a high-level delegation for the ceremony, where an initial memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Tehran and Washington is scheduled to be signed on Friday. The agreement is expected to pave the way for further negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme, sanctions relief and other key issues over the next 60 days.
Details of the Agreement
Arab media reports said the initial understanding includes a halt to military operations on all fronts and the restoration of maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping route. However, some US lawmakers have expressed concerns that differing interpretations of the agreement by both sides could lead to disputes during the implementation phase.
US President's Announcement
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump announced that an agreement with Iran had been finalised and congratulated both parties on reaching the deal. In remarks cited by international media, Mr Trump said the US naval blockade on Iranian ports had been lifted and that global shipping activity was expected to resume. He added that oil supply routes would be restored and the Strait of Hormuz would reopen following the signing of the ceasefire agreement on Friday. Efforts would also be undertaken to clear mines from the strategic waterway as part of the implementation process, he said.
Prime Minister's Response
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif welcomed the reported breakthrough, saying that an agreement between the United States and Iran to end the conflict had been reached and expressing hope that it would contribute to regional peace and stability.
