US Vice President JD Vance commended Pakistan's contribution to the peace process during a meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir in Zurich, Switzerland. Vance stated, “We love Pakistan. Pakistan has played an outstanding role in promoting peace.” The meeting took place at a negotiations center in the Swiss city, on the sidelines of technical-level talks.
Key Participants and Discussions
Alongside Vance, Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner were also present. They warmly greeted Field Marshal Asim Munir. The discussions were held in a cordial atmosphere and focused on the regional situation and matters of mutual interest. The meeting is part of broader efforts to broker peace, with the Islamabad MoU serving as a framework for technical-level negotiations.
Upcoming Meetings and Delegations
Following the US delegation meeting, PM Shehbaz is scheduled to meet an Iranian delegation led by Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and other senior officials will attend. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei confirmed that a meeting between the Iranian and Swiss foreign ministers had already taken place as part of a pre-arranged schedule. Baghaei added that the Iranian delegation would hold bilateral talks with Pakistan and Qatar.
Four-Party Discussions Expected
The United States is also expected to participate in four-party discussions involving Pakistan, Qatar, and Iran. The US Vice President, along with Witkoff and Kushner, had already arrived in the Swiss city of Bürgenstock for the negotiations. The Iranian delegation, headed by Ghalibaf, includes Foreign Minister Araghchi, senior national security official Ali Bagheri, Central Bank Governor Abdolnasser Hemmati, Kazem Gharibabadi, and Foreign Ministry spokesperson Baghaei.
