Israeli military forces have initiated a fresh counter-terrorism campaign in the northern West Bank, specifically targeting the Tubas governorate in what marks a significant escalation of operations in the occupied Palestinian territory.
Operation Details and Scope
The Israeli military and internal security services announced on Wednesday they had commenced what they described as a broad counter-terrorism operation across northern West Bank areas. According to official statements, this represents a completely new military action separate from the Iron Wall operation launched in January 2025, which primarily focused on Palestinian refugee camps.
Ahmed al-Asaad, the governor of Tubas region, confirmed to AFP that this marks the first time Israeli forces have included the entire governorate in their military operations. The operation began overnight and has concentrated on the predominantly agricultural area of Tubas, which represents the north easternmost of the West Bank's 11 governorates.
Military Actions and Restrictions
Israeli forces conducted raids on several key locations including Tammun and Tayasir towns, along with the Al-Faraa Palestinian refugee camp. The military has implemented severe movement restrictions by closing city entrances with earth mounds, effectively paralyzing normal civilian activities throughout the region.
Governor Asaad reported that an Apache helicopter participated in the operation and allegedly fired toward residential areas. He characterized the military action as politically motivated rather than security-driven, suggesting broader implications beyond immediate counter-terrorism objectives.
Humanitarian Impact and Injuries
The Palestinian Red Crescent Society has confirmed treating 10 injured individuals, with four requiring hospital transfer for more serious medical attention. Emergency medical teams reported facing significant obstacles in transporting patients within Tubas city and Tammun town since dawn, though they continue responding to assistance requests following the military raids.
An AFP photographer documented Israeli soldiers patrolling inside Tubas city, accompanied by armored patrol vehicles and surveillance drones overhead. Most commercial establishments remained closed as the military operation continued, with an ambulance being the only vehicle permitted through the military blockade at Tammun's entrance.
Israel has maintained occupation of the West Bank since 1967, with periodic military operations becoming increasingly common in recent years. The current operation in Tubas represents the latest in a series of actions that have drawn international attention and concern regarding the humanitarian situation in Palestinian territories.
